If the Rays plan on keeping Hellickson in the rotation I would strongly consider it. On the other hand, if you don't add Hellickson now, he's likely gone before you know it. |
by: teamtubby11 | date: 08/12/2010 7:36 pmDoes it pay to cut Kevin Slowey for Hellickson??

by: mgm0508 | date: 08/12/2010 2:25 amhellickson is going to rise to the top of this list before we know it! |
by: BrettG | date: 08/08/2010 9:08 pmAlex,
I agree that Hanson, Floyd and Lincecum need to be started each week.
Wandy and Volquez could be spot started, but Volquez has been inconsistent, only having thrown one good start (his first) this year.
Hammel should be started weekly right now. He's been pitching really well. Kuroda is a guy who should be started weekly. There aren't many scary offenses in the NL.
Jonathan Sanchez has had his ups and downs, but since he can strike out ten batters at any given moment, he needs to be started each week.
I like Masterson this coming week with two starts against BAL and SEA. Roll the dice with him this week. If he fails you, then there may never be another time to start him again this season. He'll be shut down before you know it. |
by: amiro | date: 08/06/2010 5:43 pmHi Brett!
Below are my pitchers for a weekly roto league where we start 6 SP’s. Would love to get your feedback for the remainder of the season. Thank you!
LINCECUM (weekly starter regardless of matchup)
HANSON (weekly starter regardless of matchup)
FLOYD (weekly started regardless of matchup)
VAZQUEZ (been rocky this season – start based on matchup?)
WANDY (been rocky this season – start based on matchup?)
SANCHEZ (weekly starter?)
HAMMEL
KURODA (streamer – will drop/add based on necessity)
I also have CHACIN in my minor league spot.
MASTERSON is available on the WW. |
by: administrator | date: 08/06/2010 1:28 pmmdegraide,
You've got five guys you start each week regardless of matchup. Then Padilla is a nice 6th guy with the way he's going.
I love masterson, especially next week with two starts against BAL and SEA but he may be shut down in a few weeks.
I'd add some depth, like a Chacin or Gorzelanny. |
by: mdegraide | date: 08/05/2010 9:16 pmBrett: How does my staff look going forward for the rest of the season?
Roy Halladay
Ubaldo Jiminez
Cliff Lee
Clayton Kershaw
Francisco Liriano
Vincent Padilla
Justin Masterson |
by: amiro | date: 07/29/2010 1:58 pmExcellent - thank you Brett! |
by: BrettG | date: 07/29/2010 1:11 pmAlex,
That's a tough call. Kuroda doesn't have upside but he's going to be more consistent than that group. I'd wait to see how Hudson does tomorrow. Kuroda doesn't represent a significant enough upgrade to make an immediate move. If he has two starts or a matchup that's favorable I might swap him in. |
by: amiro | date: 07/28/2010 8:08 pmBrett - Kuroda is available on the WW. Would you drop any of the following to pick up Kuroda as the #5/#6 pitcher in your rotation??
Cecil - Hamel - Gio - Daniel Hudson |
by: BrettG | date: 07/28/2010 1:09 pmSlowey isn't cutting it for me this year. It's possible he isn't full recovered from the surgery he had last year.
Trading one of those pitchers would be a good idea if you could get a stud OF. Ubaldo, despite his struggles, may net you the best OF. |
by: teamtubby11 | date: 07/28/2010 12:41 pmWould you have onto Kevin Slowey (I have Ubaldo, Liriano, Scherzer, Morrow, Gorzellany, Nolasco, Gavin Floyd) and start 4 pitchers. I need outfield help.
Do I trade Ubaldo??
TT11 |
by: BrettG | date: 07/25/2010 4:50 pmAlex,
Masterson still has more upside, but will be shut down in September. Padilla is pitching for a contender and has that new 55 MPG curveball.
Padilla is hot right now, but I don't see him as a weekly starter. For the rest of the season though, I might choose Padilla since he may make an extra six starts than Masterson. |
by: amiro | date: 07/24/2010 4:32 amAlso I'm assuming you would rather have Masterson over Padilla?? |
by: amiro | date: 07/24/2010 4:29 amBrett ... how do you like Vincent Padilla? See any upside in him? see him as a weekly starter or just spot? Or is he WW material? Thanks! |
by: arigney | date: 07/09/2010 8:39 pmThanks Brett! The thing that I keep going back and forth with is that I cannot keep all those players anyway. In our league, we generally look for late round keepers as most of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounders are rarely kept. I would not keep Reyes regardless. Liriano would be a keeper, but Johnson would take his place at a lower keeper slot. The wildcard is Heyward. He is a keeper in the 8th round and will be kept in that spot for the next three years. |
by: BrettG | date: 07/09/2010 8:01 pmarigney,
I believe you are giving up way too much. I like Josh Johnson, but let's face it, much like Ubaldo, his second half can't be better than the first.
He can still be a top 10 pitcher going forward, but Liriano has been just as good.
Throwing in Reyes AND Heyward is too much. Plus, you get JJ for ONE year and they get the other three for THREE years.
I'm not sure if I would trade Reyes straight up for JJ.
I would stand pat. You are giving up way too much. |
by: arigney | date: 07/09/2010 3:05 pmBrett,
Got a chance to land Josh Johnson in a H2H keeper league and wanted to get your thoughts. We can keep players for three years at their drafted positions and Johnson has one year left as a last round pick, so I could keep him for 2011.
Anyway, here is the deal. I am putting the years left for keeper status as well as the draft position of the players involved:
I would give up:
Heyward (8th round – 3 more eligible years)
Liriano (12th round – 3 more eligible years)
Reyes (2nd round – 3 more eligible years)
I would get:
Josh Johnson (Last round pick – 1 more eligible year)
Furcal
Here is my current roster. We start C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, OF, U as well as 5 SP and 2 RP. Keeper status and years left are in ( ).
Napoli
Teixiera (1st round, 3 years)
K. Johnson (last round, 3 years)
Reyes (2nd round, 3 years)
Zimmerman (6th round, 2 years)
Hamilton (18th round, 1 year)
Cruz (11th round, 3 years)
Cargo (7th round, 3 years)
Bruce (9th round, 3 years)
Heyward (8th round, 3 years)
Zobrist (last round, 2 years)
Morales (21st round, 2 years)
LaRoche
Jiminez (3rd round, 3 years)
Latos (22nd round, 3years)
Gallardo (expiring)
Liriano (12th round, 3 years)
Nolasco (4th round, 3 years)
C. Lewis (21st, 3 years)
J. Sanchez
Hunter
Volquez (last round, 3 years)
Medlen (last round, 3 years)
Soriano
Given the health question marks around Reyes and Heyward for the remainder of THIS year, this would be a great move. But being able to keep Heyward with a 8th rounder for the next three years is inticing as well. On the flip side, I would still be able to keep Johnson next year and would have a great core of Jiminez, Latos, and Johnson to go along with Hamilton and another bat (we are only able to keep 5 players each year).
Any thoughts would be much appreciated! |
by: phillypcp | date: 07/06/2010 2:34 pmthings are looking good so far. i have strasburg, liriano, and kershaw. sabermetrically they are all in the top 7 and i didn't even draft a pitcher til the 6th round. thanks.... here comes nolasco by the way |
by: BrettG | date: 06/29/2010 2:57 pmNBoyle123,
I like Felix better than Liriano going forward. I wouldn't trade him. Don't let the "selling of Cliff Lee" let you think he's not going to have a big second half. |
by: nboyle123 | date: 06/29/2010 1:40 pmWould you swap Felix for Liriano, straight up?
I may be able to get more than just Liriano. |
by: BrettG | date: 06/27/2010 9:40 pmTim Lincecum falls below 6.00 for the first time since 2008.. anyone have a comment on that? |
by: BrettG | date: 06/27/2010 3:37 pmYES! Just picked up Gorz in a few leagues.. he's back on the radar. If he can pick up where he left off, he could be a sneaky weekly starter.
He gets Pittsburgh next week. |
by: jpastorello1 | date: 06/27/2010 1:29 pmBrettG,
With Big-Z out of the rotation indefinitely, would you be picking up Tom Gorzelanny in hopes of him starting again? |
by: BrettG | date: 06/24/2010 8:39 pmAlex,
I would add Chacin. He's a top prospect who is receiving playing time now. His K/9 ratio is above average and his ERA and WHIP should be better as evidenced by the SPI rankings.
When De La Rosa returns, who knows what will happen, but he's worth owning and starting right now.
His start next week comes at home against the Giants. |
by: amiro | date: 06/23/2010 3:16 amBrett .... what are your thoughts on Chacin? you think he sticks? kid is available on the WW and after tonight's performance, looks real tempting. |
by: Booz4Matusz | date: 06/22/2010 3:20 pmcan we get a Kris Medlen update? I think he's in the rotation to stay... intriguing SP prospect playing for a good team. your thoughts? |
by: Joel | date: 06/21/2010 11:44 pmMario,
I wouldn't expect much from Martin. He's face Houston, SD and Cleveland so far and faces Baltimore this week. The matchups have been cake so far.
With only 25 strikeouts in 41 minor league innings this year he doesn't seem like he's got much upside. |
by: mariofdny | date: 06/21/2010 2:51 amAny thoughts on J.D. Martin? I've been looking over his numbers and he seems legit...I know he pitches for the Nationals but can he be useful? |
by: amiro | date: 06/21/2010 1:50 amThanks Brett ... yeah, both matchups do blow, unfortunately I have to go with one or drop an SP. Thank you! |
by: BrettG | date: 06/21/2010 12:55 amAlex,
Neither are great matchups. Hammel has been pitching better than Masterson but Masterson's matchup in Cinci could be the better bet. |
by: amiro | date: 06/19/2010 6:33 amBrett ... pick one of the following for the upcoming week: Hammel at home vs BOS or Masterson at CIN ... thanks! |
by: BrettG | date: 06/18/2010 1:01 amjpastorello1,
Out of this group I'd rank them as follows:
Shields
Scherzer
B Anderson
Lilly
Wandy
Harden
I like Anderson best but who knows about his health.
Scherzer has the most upside but won't likely be as consistent as Shields.
Not a fan of Wandy at this point. Forget Harden. |
by: jpastorello1 | date: 06/17/2010 4:37 pmgoing forward, who do you like out of this batch:
Shields
Scherzer
Lilly
Wandy
Harden
B Anderson
for some reason I am in a different 12-team league then stated last week, and all of these guys are FAs |
by: administrator | date: 06/16/2010 1:03 amNolasco has been a big disappointment. I wonder if he's hurt.
I'd try to move him if his name can get you more than he's worth.
Point out his second half of 2009 where he went 7-2 and struck out 105 batters over the final 94 innings. |
by: teamtubby11 | date: 06/15/2010 6:42 pmWhat is the deal with Ricky Nolasco? Why are the K's down so much? |
by: administrator | date: 06/10/2010 7:50 pmI think my favorite aspect of the Sabermetric Pitching Index is that a pitcher can have a "bad start" and still move up in the rankings.
Wainwright and Chacin both are examples in the last 24 hours. |
by: administrator | date: 06/04/2010 9:22 pmI would rank them this way:
Cecil, Matsuzaka, Chacin.. after that the upside ceases...
Wells and LeBlanc are similar.. won't help you much in K's.
Those other "older guys" I wouldn't scoop up unless they had a great matchup against Pittsburgh for example. |
by: jpastorello1 | date: 06/04/2010 7:02 pmthanks for the help, Brett. Now, seeing as my rotation has lost a member, I need to pick up an FA. Who do you like, if any, of the listed guys: Randy Wells, Harang, Lowe, Wolf, Buehrle, Dice-K, Arroyo, Pineiro, Cecil, Chacin, Leblanc.
I play with ERA, WHIP, Ks, Ws, Svs, HLDs |
by: BrettG | date: 06/04/2010 4:20 pmjpastorello1,
I think I might make that deal. Getting Lind would solify the power categories. Trading for power never comes easy so this might be a great opportunity.
JFelds,
Thanks for the info regarding the Reds. Their staff does look very good this year. Arroyo and Harang have rubber arms. Although I'd love to see what Chapman could do in the majors. |
by: Jfelds | date: 06/04/2010 3:45 pmJpastorello1,
Not a writer or admin on here, but I am from Cincinnati. The baseball people I know would loathe the reds if they brought Volquez back this year and used him much because he will be barely one year off TJ surgery. In addition, with the starting pitching situation here in Cincinnati, Chapman may or may not come up as a starter. Think Bailey/Leake/Arroyo/Harang(atang)/Cueto as a 5 man rotation. Plus we have LeCure (doing ok so far) and Maloney (had success last year). I don't have insider info or anything, just some advice from a local. |
by: jpastorello1 | date: 06/04/2010 1:52 pmand a pickup last week of Anibal Sanchez which has been doing well for me |
by: jpastorello1 | date: 06/04/2010 1:48 pmoffense: Doumit, Morneau, Ian Stewart, Starlin Castro, D Wright, Kemp, Rasmus, Markakis, and Sizemore (RIP)
pitching: Ulbaldo, Baker, Slowey, Wade Davis,
Nolasco, Floyd, Ricky Romero, Volquez, Chapman
if i didnt just take this sizemore hit i probably wouldnt need to make the trade as badly but I seem to be losing out on HRs lately |
by: BrettG | date: 06/03/2010 11:20 pmjpastorello1,
I'd have to know more about your roster. I like Nolasco to improve a bit and I can say the same about Lind.
It's fair. What's your staff look like? |
by: jpastorello1 | date: 06/03/2010 1:35 pmI know this is a pitching column, but would you trade away Nolasco coming off a nice win that may be a turning point in the season for him, for Adam Lind who is struggling at the moment but still has the talent to string together a top OF season? |
by: BrettG | date: 06/03/2010 1:25 amJ Felds,
The guys to drop from that group (regardless of how they do in their first start back) would be both Holland and Bailey.
I like your other guys a lot better. |
by: Jfelds | date: 06/03/2010 12:22 amThanks, I agree on Takahashi (why I didn't just add him even though he's so high on the list). I was thinking Cahill had the most upside. Interesting about the comment on Anderson as he is on my team currently. I will need to drop two of the following though once Holland and Bailey are back from DL. Any ideas?
Staff includes: Bailey and Holland, B.Anderson, J. Vasquez, A. Sanchez, G. Gonzalez, Bonderman, Hamels, Zito, Romero, Weaver, Strasburg, & Papelbon/Soriano in relief.
I'm thinking I may end up dropping Holland (hitters park) when he comes back. Then only have to drop 1 more to have Bailey active. Strategy tells me I should leave the guys on DL through their first start and have the largest samples to make a decision. You got any input here, as I need to make up pts since Stras has been taking up a slot as an inactive so far. |
by: administrator | date: 06/02/2010 9:18 pmJ Felds,
I think Takahashi is a flash in the pan and that Tillman has a difficult AL East to deal with.
Volstad is my second choice behind Cahill.
Don't bother with Robertson.. he's awful.
Willis is interesting in the NL, now that he'll be facing SD and SF often enough.
I would put him behind Cahill and Volstad. |
by: administrator | date: 06/02/2010 8:55 pmJ felds,
Cahill is the guy to own of that bunch. He has upside and has been pitching the best of late.
Brett Anderson was not on anyone's radar as this point last year and then he just took off.
Take a chance on Cahill now. |
by: administrator | date: 06/02/2010 8:54 pmmdegraide,
Lincecum was so far ahead of everyone that his previous three starts still leave him at the top.
Additionally, he's been a bit unlucky considering his elite status still remains. |
by: Jfelds | date: 06/02/2010 1:44 pmIs there a link to May so I could see the improvements?
Holland went on DL and I need a starter.
12 team mixed, total pts league very heavy on pitching pts - 9 pos players,12 pitchers 2 DL spots
Do I pick up Takahashi, Robertson, Volstad, Tillman, or Cahill? those seem to be the best free agents at the moment.
What do you think of an NL Dontrelle? Too risky? he resides in AZ and no longer faces a DH. |
by: mdegraide | date: 06/02/2010 3:18 amHow is Lincecum still at the top of this list? |
by: BrettG | date: 06/01/2010 8:45 pmDrop Fister for Bonderman |
by: theburnsey4 | date: 06/01/2010 7:52 pmMy current staff is Verlander, Haren, Shield, Hughes, Leake, Fister, and Cecil, but I want to pick up Bonderman- any suggestions? |
by: BrettG | date: 06/01/2010 3:15 pmReaders,
You'll notice that no pitchers are red or green right now. That's because a new motnh has begun.
The pitchers will turn red or green when comparing their June SPI ranking to their May ranking.
You were able to track the red and green throughout the month of May and now we start again as we compare May to June. |
by: BrettG | date: 05/31/2010 6:09 pmTD,
Definitely drop Harang. I'd also drop Wandy.
The time is now or never to add Bonderman and Scherzer. Run to the wire. |
by: TylerDurdan | date: 05/29/2010 9:37 pmBrett- Always enjoy this spreadsheet. Thoughts on dropping two of the following three for Bonderman and Scherzer: Harang, Wandy or Vazquez. Thanks! |
by: BrettG | date: 05/26/2010 11:59 pmIt is time to pick up Ely but not yet time to drop Wandy. |
by: teamtubby11 | date: 05/25/2010 9:23 pmIs it time to drop Wandy Rod. and pick up Ely??
TT |
by: BrettG | date: 05/19/2010 12:35 pmUpdate: Beckett possibly injured.. keep that in mind. I may hold off for now. |
by: BrettG | date: 05/18/2010 10:45 pmI would trade Liriano for Beckett.. Beckett started off terribly last year too.. He ended up having a year similar to his previous ones..
You could probably get something else in addition to Beckett if you are giving up a guy in Liriano who has such a big name. |
by: teamtubby11 | date: 05/18/2010 8:38 pmBrett,
Would you consider trading F. Liriano to a frustrated Josh Beckett owner??
Thanks,
TT 11 |
by: BrettG | date: 05/18/2010 11:42 amAlex,
The only one I would consider dropping is Holland. Let's see how he does in his next few starts.
Masterson – Cecil – Scott Olsen – Bonderman are the four I like best.
Masterson and Gio are very similar. Cecil has upside as well but can have his ups and downs.
I think Olsen and Bonderman might be safer bets given their major league experience.
Monitor Holland and continue following the Index and I'll keep you posted. I'd sit tight for right now though. |
by: amiro | date: 05/17/2010 5:09 pmBrett … hoping you could provide some feedback. I play in a 5x5 weekly roto league (with a very short bench, only two players). Below are my SP’s and some of the WW candidates which rate fairly well on your Sabermetrics Rankings. Curious to see if you would drop any one of my SP’s for a listed WW candidate. Thank you!
ROSTERED SP’s
Lincecum (keeper) – Hanson (keeper) – Vazquez (drafted) – Wandy (keeper) – Gio (drafted) – Pavano (WW) – Holland (WW)
WW SP’s
Masterson – Cecil – Scott Olsen – Bonderman – Correia – Jason Vargas – Jeff Francis - Blanton |
by: BrettG | date: 05/09/2010 2:11 amShasha,
I wouldn't drop Scherzer for any of them. Certainly not Pavano, because he doesn't have Scherzer's upside.
Cecil and Chacin have only made a few starts, but could easily breakout this year Tommy Hanson style.
It's just too early to drop a guy like Scherzer despite his early struggles. |
by: shasha | date: 05/08/2010 10:00 pmWould you drop Scherzer for any of these. Pavano, Cecil, or Chacin. Thanks |
by: amiro | date: 05/08/2010 1:14 pmExcellent ... thank you Brett! |
by: BrettG | date: 05/08/2010 12:42 pmAlex,
I'd go with Pavano first.. he's the safest bet to be consistent.
Blanton is boring, yet at this stage of the season, likely a bit more reliable than the other three, but with a lot less upside.
I like Cecil the best of the young three.
Olsen was a top prospect in Florida. Maybe he's putting it all together as a post-hype.
Masterson has the K/9 ratio, but needs to decide if he's going to join Buchholz and Hughes or Norris and Harden. |
by: amiro | date: 05/08/2010 7:13 amBrett ... could you rank the following SP's in order of your preference in a standard 5x5 league ... thank you!
Blanton, Cecil, Masterson, Pavano, Scott Olsen |
by: Mojotronica | date: 05/07/2010 3:28 pmCan we get a Kevin Slowey update? Thanks! |
by: administrator | date: 05/07/2010 3:17 pmSorry Booz4Matusz- Penny is updated. |
by: Booz4Matusz | date: 05/07/2010 12:33 pmWhat, no Brad Penny Love? Can't get an update on my boy? |
by: BrettG | date: 05/04/2010 11:50 pmDropping Scherzer is risky, although I completely understand your sentiments. You expected a lot more from him and he's doing nothing but hurting your ERA and WHIP.
Not that I don't like Gio and Wade, but I wouldn't drop Scherzer just yet.
If you really want to, I would choose Gio over Wade because of his K/9 potential and secured rotation spot. |
by: teamtubby11 | date: 05/04/2010 8:36 pmWhat do you do with Max Scherzer?? Drop him for LeBlanc or Gio. I have Sanchez, Liriano, Nolasco, and Ubaldo so do I wait?? |
by: BrettG | date: 05/02/2010 2:30 pmGREEN COLORING means the pitcher has improved by two SPI points since the previous month.
RED COLORING means the pitcher has regressed two SPI points since the previous month.
Ex. Volstad has moved up to a 1 from a -1, which is a net gain of two.
Despite his current score of 1 being "just ok," it's worth noting that he's made significant improvement and that he should be monitored. |
by: BrettG | date: 05/02/2010 2:29 pmAlex,
Like your staff.. tons of upside. Be patient with Vazquez.. |
by: amiro | date: 05/02/2010 5:16 ammy bad ... meant to say picked up Pavano :) |
by: amiro | date: 05/02/2010 5:15 ammy bad ... meant to say, picked up Pavano :) |
by: amiro | date: 05/01/2010 7:02 pm@BrettG thank you ... picked up Masterson. SP's are a mess right now with Vazquez and Masterson bringing the rest of the rotation down: Lincecum, Wandy, Hanson, Gio and now Pavano. ARGH! |
by: BrettG | date: 05/01/2010 3:32 amPavano is the safest bet of the group.
Correia is a safe bet as well but with less upside than Pavano.
Norris presents the most upside yet might go through some rough patches from time to time.
I'd grab Cecil only if the other three are gone. |
by: mdegraide | date: 04/30/2010 11:58 pmAfter looking at this im happy to have drafted Sanchez, Liriano, Jiminez..... |
by: amiro | date: 04/30/2010 10:18 pmNot much available on my league's WW. What are your thoughts on Brett Cecil or Pavano (they are the highest ranked per your chart available on WW). Bud Norris and Correia are available as well. Bummer, LeBlanc is not available. |
by: BrettG | date: 04/30/2010 4:59 pmDon't Wade any longer.. It's time to pick up LeBlanc! |
by: BrettG | date: 04/25/2010 7:44 pmGorzelanny came up with the Pirates and was pretty good.
LeBlanc is a top prospect for the Padres but may have trouble finding a spot in the rotation when Young returns.
LeBlanc isn't a big strikeout guy but could succeed a la Kevin Correia considering his ballpark.
I'd add them if you have roster space but take a wait and see approach until they make a few more starts.
May begins true analysis. |
by: arigney | date: 04/25/2010 7:27 pmSo, are Leblanc and Gorzelanny the real deals? |
by: BrettG | date: 04/24/2010 6:45 pmAs of right now there is no minimum. I will cap it off each month though with the league minimum. |
by: mick605 | date: 04/24/2010 3:16 pmhow many IP's does a pitcher need to be on this list? |
by: BrettG | date: 04/24/2010 2:36 amBud Norris is the early-season favorite to be this year's Jonathan Sanchez.
He could rotate 6IP 9K 2 ER starts with 4IP 6ER 4K starts. |
by: BrettG | date: 04/24/2010 2:35 amYou'll notice how few pitchers are highlighted in yellow now. That number should remain at about 10 pitchers all year.
I'm thinking the next to go is Gorzelanny. |
by: BrettG | date: 04/16/2010 10:45 amI would take a wait and see approach with Gorzelanny and CJ Wilson as well. But if you have roster space and want to take a chance then go for it. But don't insert them into your starting lineup just yet. |
by: BrettG | date: 04/16/2010 10:44 amI would wait until the end of the month to take people very seriously, especially those who have shown glimpses in the past but always burn us in the end, like OP.
However, a guy like Dallas Braden has another 7+K performance and it might be worth grabbing him in case he's still in yellow by May 1st. |
by: mdegraide | date: 04/16/2010 2:13 amOne other thing. How many starts should a pitcher have before we really start to go after these guys in the yellow? I mean I dont see any way Oliver Perez is going to stay in this group. Do I wait 4-5 starts and if a guy is still there I know its for real and to make a move for him? |
by: BrettG | date: 04/15/2010 11:44 pmA good ERA is generally considered around 3.00 - 3.50. ERC and DIPS should be in that range to be considered good. If a pitcher has both ERC and DIPS in that range, he's pitching pretty well.
Comparing a pitcher's ERA to his ERC and DIPS will let you know if his ERA is accurate. It will let you know if his ERA should be due to improve or regress as well. |
by: mdegraide | date: 04/15/2010 1:56 amAre the certain benchmarks as far as DIPS and ERC that I should be looking for? |
by: Peterb | date: 04/09/2010 3:43 pmsorta shocked to see his dips come out so high, after 5 walks, but he allowed 0 HR's and K'd a good amount, so that worked in his favor.
This kid is gonna win 15 games this year. |
by: Peterb | date: 04/09/2010 3:42 pmMattuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus! That's my boy blue! |
by: BrettG | date: 04/09/2010 3:24 pmPete where are you? Brian Matusz with a 5.0 on the richter scale? |
by: Peterb | date: 04/08/2010 1:17 pmMatt Garza was flat out dominant last night, not shocked to see him at the top of this list right now.. He was throwing 96 in the 8th inning! |
by: Peterb | date: 04/07/2010 7:06 pmJames Shields was a lucky S.O.B. that it wasn't worse for him, all 3 HR's allowed were solo shots. |
by: administrator | date: 04/07/2010 7:04 pmDallas Braden certainly wasn't a slacker last night |
by: BrettG | date: 04/06/2010 1:57 pmJosh Johnson, as you can see has an ERA that matches up very well with his ERC and DIPS. Essentially, his bad ERA from his first start indicates a truly awful outing. |
by: BrettG | date: 04/06/2010 1:01 pmHere's how things are working so far..
CC Sabathia has a 8.44 ERA. His ERC and DIPS are significantly lower than that, as evidenced on our Index. Although it's only been one start, CC pitched a lot better than his 8.44 ERA looks.
Jon Garland on the other hand, has a 4.50 ERA, but his ERC and DIPS are a lot higher than 4.50, meaning he pitched a lot worse than it shows in the boxscore.
These are the kind of details that will allow you to trade for a guy like Sabathia and trade away a guy like Garland at the right time during the season.
Other owners looks at the stats, but reading between the lines puts you a step ahead of the pack. |
by: phillypcp | date: 03/31/2010 3:07 pmi just drafted on the 3/28, and here's how my pitching turned out. Clayton kershaw, ricky nolasco, wandy rodriguez, jonathan sanchez, jorge de la rosa, erik bedard(out til june)and my last pick was robinson tejeda. it was a 14 team draft and i went with 5x5 strategy. as you can see, i was paying attention to my sabermetrics list. hopefully it will pay off! |
by: DOKKEN | date: 03/20/2010 1:52 amThank you for the reply.
I will read the artices. |
by: BrettG | date: 03/15/2010 8:13 pmDOKKEN,
Here are the articles you should read to get a sense of what ERC and DIPS represent:

http://www.fantasyphenoms.com/plus.php?id=67
When looking for undervalued pitchers, you can read our articles which explain that. They are on the right hand side bar on the home page.
In sum, pitchers like Kershaw and Peavy could be much more valuable than they are in drafts.
Someone like Ricky Nolasco is undervalued as well because of his 2009 5.06 ERA.
Email me if you have any further questions that I haven't clarified:

by: DOKKEN | date: 03/15/2010 12:52 pmHi
I am trying to understand how to spot the undervallued pitchers using the index.
Can someone explain to me what for what I shpould look.
Is it the lower DIPS and ERC vary from the actual ERA for a pitcher the indicator the I am looking for in finding a pitcher who will have a better 2010?
Also, is there a writeup on what these terms mean(erc dips) and the idea behind them?
Thank you |
by: BrettG | date: 03/14/2010 7:10 pmVazquez tied with Lincecum last year ability-wise.
The slight edge obviously went to Lincecum, but Javier wasn't far behind.
Have you taken a close look at Vazquez' numbers?
Now in Yankee Stadium and the American League, I wouldn't expect him to rank in the top five again this year, but he should still be in the top 20. |
by: sumner0458 | date: 03/14/2010 6:40 pmI don't this. How is Javier the best pitcher? |
by: BrettG | date: 03/07/2010 6:21 pmAlex,
I would combine the two equally. Some pitchers in the top 60 didn't pitch much at all last year, so they aren't included in the Sabermetric Pitching Index, such as Brandon Webb, Ben Sheets and Tim Hudson.
People in the top 60 are ranked to include projected innings pitched, etc.
The Index refers to a pitcher's ability.
Jeff to answer your question, Jake Peavy is one of the pitchers who didn't pitch much last year, but when he did, he showed the same ability he has in previous years.
His ranking in the top 60 is lower because he's now gone two seasons in a row without 200 innings.
However, his ability doesn't seem to have diminished. |
by: mizzouree | date: 03/07/2010 6:09 pmI don't understand Jake Peavy being deemed elite last year. I owned him, and he was anything but elite last year. |
by: amiro | date: 03/07/2010 4:58 pmHow does this Sabermetric Pitching Index differ from your 1-60 SP rankings here --> http://www.fantasyphenoms.com/baseball.php?id=1369
Just wondering the difference in rankings between the two and as far as FBB drafts, which one should be considered more heavily.
Thanks! |
by: mikeyboy324 | date: 03/07/2010 1:46 pmok i see thanks i just was a lil confused bye the vazquez ranking |
by: BrettG | date: 03/07/2010 1:34 pmBrett Anderson, Jorge De La Rosa and Jonathan Sanchez are three that comes to mind. |
by: BrettG | date: 03/07/2010 1:33 pmmikeyboy,
Last year, Vazquez was tied with Lincecum as the best fantasy pitcher, ability wise. Most of the time that translates to fantasy wise as well.
Now that Vazquez has moved to the AL, his numbers may not be exactly the same as they were in 2009.
For all those who didn't have any drastic changes, then their ranking on this list would be accurate.
When looking for sleepers this year, you should look at the chart and find the names that you are surprised to be ranked so high.
Generally speaking, those are the ones who pitched better than their numbers showed and should be nice bargains this year. |
by: mikeyboy324 | date: 03/07/2010 12:37 pmThis is my first year using this is this how you rank your pitchers like is vazquez considered the best starter or do are there are things your looking at?...also when people say they found greinke and jimenez last year bye looking at the chart what overall number did they have last year and who looks to be that person This year? |
by: mick605 | date: 03/06/2010 2:34 amthis is great guys, thanks for making your pitching index so easy to follow. I'm looking forward to a season of domination! |
by: BrettG | date: 03/05/2010 8:34 pmThe pitchers annotated in yellow represent those who were elite last year based on their ability.
Once this season begins, anyone receiving a current score of 5.00 or better will be deemed an elite weekly starter and will also be highlighted in yellow. |
by: stainer22 | date: 03/05/2010 12:11 amThe Index is always a key part of my draft. Two years ago it led me to Greinke and Lincecum. Last year Jimenez. Keep up the good work FP! |
